Ask HN: How do you maintain your glasses?

Statistically over 60% people worldwide wear glasses ... stereo-typically this number is probably higher on HN.

So with that in mind let me tap into the collective hive mind of HN and ask:

* How do you maintain your glasses? * How do you clean them? * How long do they last before you need new ones?

I used to use paper towels and teeshirts to "clean" mine. I now try very very hard to only use microfibre cleaning cloth.

I find the coatings last longer and I get less scratches.

Scratches? You should try glasses made with glass.

High refractive index glass, sure, on the one really weak eye. But the other isn't so weak and my glasses hung squew on my face. Also, trifocals and subsequently variable focus glass is super expensive. Variable focus plastic is cheaper. I can replace plastic lenses every other year, and they weigh less on my face.

I moved to plastic lenses five years ago 50 years into my life as a glasses wearer. How long have you had sub par eyeballs?

25 years ago, I had 10 years on plastic and back to glass 10 years ago, never regretted it

If I get another 5 years out of plastic I may flip back but I can't promise I'll remember to report back. I will be too busy growing a lawn, to curate very carefully so I can tell invited guests to get off it.

A drop of dishwashing liquid and a bit of water. Get the rinse-off step right and there's not even a need to wipe off the lens afterwards, something in the soap makes the water droplets run off without any residue.
