Ask HN: Good social media sites in 2021?

What social media/social sites do you recommend?

Reddit seems fairly niche. Facebook and LinkedIn seem very spammy. I don't understand Mastodon. I love Hacker News, and it seems more "social news" discussion than a way to connect with people for offline interaction.

How do you connect with people, personally and professionally?

Many people have contact information in their bio/profile: email, website, keybase, Twitter, GitHub, etc.

Other than that, many connections are made in the comments.

The only one I use is; App.eq.community - you have to (request t join) focused on underrepresented groups.

“In summary, EQ is the space to support each other, learn to engage in meaningful dialogue, and access hidden opportunities. “

Reddit is great if you find the right subs and lock your feed down to just those.

I’ve actually really been enjoying TikTok now that the algo has my interests dialed in.

Shameless plug, I just released a social media app on Friday: snacktime.com

Local pub, church, tech events ...

Charity events ... nothing works like working in a team for a charity.

Join a sports team ... darts, baseball, etc

Find a meetup group in your area for something you are curious about.

Mov.Im is quite interesting at the moment, pulling in a good selection of feeds from a growing range is sources.

None.

Personal emails and/or video/phone calls (VOIP if necessary).

Not sure if it's useful to meet people offline, but MetaFilter seems like a high quality forum.
