Millions and millions of people died from the common cold before 2019 too. Every year.
It boggles the mind that some people live to old age and never find out some basic facts of life. (I.e., that the "common cold" is actually a very nasty disease, especially for people with comorbidities. Before 2019 we downplayed the danger because we understood that there's nothing we could do anyways.)
I hate with a passion the ugliness of the politicians talking about flu deaths like they are acceptable. Also annoyingly I haven’t seen one interview or press conference where someone in the press has called them out for not doing enough for people dying of the flu. Modern medicine is remarkable and if well funded and incentivised, can create marvels.
Forget about funding sports or political parties etc, they are cursory. Fund science it is enteral and truly can be always a net greater good.
“ The experts argue that a conservative death rate of 1% would therefore make COVID-19 at least 10 times as deadly as the flu, and therefore “significantly more lethal” than the common cold.”
Deaths from the common cold aren't classified as such; people who die due to the common cold have comorbidities and complications that are usually listed on the death certificate instead.
P.S. "The flu" and the common cold are different diseases.
> Deaths from the common cold aren't classified as such;
If you are unable to find evidence that supports your claims, aren't you basing your personal beliefs in unsubstantiated hypothesis which are rejected by the facts?
If you are not able to come up with a rational basis for your beliefs and even outright reject facts that refute your personal assertion, what exactly suggests to you that your statements are remotely compatible with reality?
> Millions and millions of people died from the common cold before 2019 too. Every year.
Extraordinary claims demand extraordinary evidence. Do you have a source for your extraordinary claim that "millions and millions" die of the flu? Because the CDC estimates that yearly there are between 12k and 52k deaths due to the flu.
And by the way, the flu is an umbrella term that refers to respiratory illnesses caused by multiple viruses, thus comparing deaths from Covid19 with deaths from infections from multiple viruses is not exactly apples to apples.
