There is so much focus on people who haven't been vaccinated... I'd like to see some clear information about what is going on with the increase in cases and hospitalizations. Are these overwhelmingly unvaccinated people or is there a big breakthrough infection component? In regions with high vaccination rates, is covid much less of a problem.

I'm suspicion these "surges" are really just because people didn't get vaccinated, and instead of focusing attention on addressing its spreading, we're holding up vaccination as some kind of talisman that is not actually making a big difference. But I'd like to be wrong, and feel we can all be comfortable as long as we're vaccinated. Anyway, I think the messaging has become very muddied.

(I hate to have to add this, but yes I am vaccinated)

Breakthrough cases in those fully vaccinated accounted for 11,906 cases in Utah, 645 hospitalizations and 64 deaths. Of fully vaccinated residents, about 0.8% have tested positive for COVID-19. Of those vaccinated cases, 0.04% have required hospitalization and 0.004% have died, state data shows.

The latest deaths include:

A Cache County woman between the ages of 25 and 44, who was hospitalized when she died. A Davis County woman, 65-84, hospitalized. Two Davis County men, 65-84, hospitalized. A Davis County man, older than 85, hospitalized. A Davis County man, 45-64, hospitalized. Two Utah County men, 25-44, one of whom was hospitalized and one who was not. A Utah County man, 65-84, hospitalized. Two Salt Lake County women, 65-84, one of whom was hospitalized and one who was a long-term care resident. Two Salt Lake County men, 65-84, one of whom was not hospitalized and one who was a long-term care resident. A Salt Lake County man, older than 85, not hospitalized. Two Washington County men, 45-64, hospitalized. Two Washington County men, 65-84, one of whom was hospitalized and one who was not. A Washington County woman, 65-84, hospitalized. And are there unvaccinated numbers available as well?

Sorry, missed this good paragraph..

Over the last 28 days, unvaccinated residents face 4.1 times greater risk of dying from COVID-19, 5.9 times greater risk of being hospitalized due to COVID-19 and 5.4 times greater risk of testing positive for COVID-19 than vaccinated people, according to the state health department.

Thank you

From Seattle:

The county is 73/27 vax/unvax vs cases 32/68 vax/unvax, hosp 13/87 vax/unvax and death 30/70 vax/unvax. This is further confounded by age, as younger tend to be more unvax and have less risk of covid complications.

Obviously, this is data we know. What we don't know is how well vax will hold in the future, as the virus mutates.

Edit: I had misread and the reality is in the opposite sense of the number I asked about below, like you'd expect, the bigger number is the unvaccinated.

---

I'm on my phone so I couldn't read the site. Are you saying more of the hospitalized and dead are vaccinated, I.e. is the second number in the 13/87 and 30/70 the proportion that is vaccinated. I understand it's more complicated by the fact that older or sicker people are more likely to be vaccinated.

Edit: just thinking about it, I suppose most under 12s are not vaccinated and also mostly are ok if they get covid. Whereas e.g. over 70s are probably mostly vaccinated but still could have a bad time with it. So it really seems it's hard to get a clear interpretation. At minimum it would have to be broken down by age and vaccination to start to get a picture of what's happening

All ratios are formatted as vax/unvax. More unvax people are in the hospital and dying, in spite of more people being vaxed in the population. It's bad. Get vaxed.

Ah sorry, I misread the first statistic as cases by status, not vaccinated/ unvaccinated percentages and that's why I thought it inconsistent with the others.

Grrr, I misread a bit. It's 73/27 vax/unvax in the population at large vs. cases 32/68 vax/unvax. Not a big difference, still we should be precise.

Thanks for sharing. Best presentation of the data I have seen so far.
