> Texas Republican Gov. Greg Abbott on Tuesday signed into law a bill that bans 24-hour and drive-thru voting, imposes new hurdles on mail-in ballots and empowers partisan poll watchers.
Is this article a joke? All these measures are common sense. Next: 'Texas governor signs banning voting technology into law'. 'Texas R Gov G.A. on Tuesday signed into law a bill that bans black-box voting machines. [...] Diebold stock lost 10 points before closing.'
Voting: in-person, with ID, secret, on paper, restricted to election day, election day is a holiday. Not really that hard.
As an aside, my state is a complete joke:
* Mail-in voting only. Every time you vote, a small chance someone will break the vote secrecy and connect your name to your vote. People have been fired for making small political donations to the wrong cause.
* No ID check. An opaque apparatus mails votes to whomever they see fit over a period of months. Anybody can fill in a vote and return it as they see fit. There is no guarantee the actual voter did fill their own vote.
* Weeks long voting period. There is no chain of integrity. Postal workers transport votes to the tabulation location with no independent observers. Who knows what 'votes' end up in the final pile.
"Opponents of Senate Bill 1 said its provisions will disproportionately restrict voting access for marginalized voters -- particularly people of color and those with disabilities."
Is anyone buying this? It seems one parties strategy to win elections revolves around paying teenagers to harass their grandparents and neighbors to sign up for and vote.
At what point does it become voter harrassment? After the 3rd non profit knocks on grandma's door? The 10th?
If someone doesn't want to vote, they don't want to vote.
