Zero Covid, a once wildly popular ideology, quietly faces extinction (dossier.substack.com)

I don't know, I live in Queensland, Australia - 0 cases. The economy is doing OK, not great, but its going, since everyones just living their life. Across the border they just reported 100 deaths in the current outbreak. I've just had my second shot, so it seems once everyone is vaccinated then reopen the borders. The attitude here is very different though, once a single case is reported the streets are empty. I know people in the southern states and their lockdowns aren't really taken seriously and are basically ignored, I'd love to know why the difference exists, the behaviour is so different in different states.

It makes sense, doesn't it? The playing field has changed completely since the beginning of the pandemic. New variants are much more transmissible, more is known about the virus, and vaccines are widely available for the countries who bought them. Strategies that were once effective for zero covid now only work to suppress cases to a low enough level until the population gets vaccinated and covid becomes much less of a threat.

Did anyone in New Zealand really plan on closing down the country forever?
