Apple to announce client-side photo hashing system to detect child abuse images (9to5mac.com)

I'm not sure how to take this news. I think Apple chose a very serious topic (child pornography) as a trojan horse to enter into people's private lives. What if we start seeing parents who had no ill intention getting cuffed and visited by CPS just because they thought their kid looked cute in the tub?

Granted, there needs to be more efforts to curb child abuse. Even a little bit of news like this would probably kick a lot of child pornographers off of the platform (a good thing!). In the past, photos from a film camera had to be developed at a lab so it was likely that suspicious photos would be identified. It's assuring while also terrifying what implications this would bring. ML accelerated SoC's are becoming more of a thing but I'm probably sure it won't stop someone with a will and a slight bit of sophistication.

I believe a 58-year-old who worked at the Silicon Engineering Group at Apple got caught with child pornography. Perhaps Apple should dogfood with their employees. https://www.losaltosonline.com/news/hills-man-arrested-on-ch...
