[flagged] On Veganism – and why it shouldn't be easily mocked and written off (aliciakennedy.news)

Veganism shouldn't be written off, but it's quite easy to find arguments which frustrate the clear-cut message that they hope to deliver, which is that folks should never eat animals but that folks should nonetheless eat something. My typical approach to vegan arguments is to introduce them to Jainism and have them compare and contrast their values and practices.

The idea that vegans are wealthy and white is simply false. Around the world it tends to be the poorest people who do not eat meat, and in the US most vegans are low income and more likely to be racialized peoples.

Isn't it also because vegans are younger on average, so poorer? And young people are more likely to be racialized.

Would be interesting to have some stats where they control by age.

“I would also recommend reading the scholar Lisa Betty on the crisis in veganism that won’t fully acknowledge white supremacy, which is spot-on.”

- Actual quote that the author wrote for this article

It's pretty common for vegans to suffer hair loss and develop dark circles under their eyes (anemia iirc)

Pass

Do you have a reference for the incidence rates of those side-effects?

It'd be useful to compare and contrast those against the risks of food poisoning from undercooked and contaminated animal products, and the sense of having supported and received food from potentially unsanitary animal product preparation centres.

Would you mind sharing some sources?

source: just google it

I meant reliable sources, i.e. scientific papers.

For every bonkers assertion you will find "evidence" by "just googling it". I would be careful not to get trapped in confirmation bias in this way.

There's a wealth of information out there, even scientific papers. Additionally there are thousands of anecdotal reports on vegan forums.

Like I said, just google it. Well documented phenomenon

Lots of “non-traditional” sources. The Reddit story might have something worthwhile.

It doesn’t sound like it’s a common problem, from my cursory investigation

Absurd

You could write a stack of books on the maladies of excessive animal consumption. And another stack on the environmental cost.
