Tell HN: Hacker News got me a good job
58 points by bckr on July 14, 2021 | hide | past | favorite | 22 comments
So, if you're considering replying to a "Who wants to be hired?" thread, do it, ASAP.

The original version of my comment wasn't very good, but it still got me traction. I updated it as I improved my resume and interviewing skills, and the improved version[] is what my new employer saw.

Thanks HN.

HN really helped me to quit my job. My first SaaS posted here was kinda well received and everything just went on from there. Next to that many threads helped me to understand that I am in the middle of a burnout.

It's the other way around but HN really helped my carrier

Inspiring and maybe that's in my future too!

Did you first SaaS project work out? Are doing your own thing now?

Yes, it was basically just slowly growing as long as i owned it. But most my friends earned more than me, so it wasn't life changing (other than suddenly having time). I sold it after a few years for a low 5 digit amount.

I think the most important thing was to learn that i can make money without a "regular job". I haven't turned rich since then, but i have all the time focusing on projects i actually care about which is the single best job i can imagine.

I'm hoping that I can reach that point, as a designer.

I find that engineers can enjoy more of such autonomy because their work can better stand on its own, and I'm a little envious of that.

But is it really? I am no designer so I don't know, but my weakest point as engineer often is a intuitive design. My affiliate sites would surely work better wouldn't they look like bootstrap templates.

I had to learn the basics of your job to succeed in mine, maybe it works the other way around too?

That's awesome.

HN helped get me in touch with a startup in Hamburg, Germany about 3-years ago from the "Who is Hiring" monthly posts. The rest is history and I now live in Berlin with my wife and dogs and enjoy the EU a ton and my job (with a different company, but HN helped get me here).

Amazing, thanks for sharing! It almost feels like cheating the system.

yep! huge kudos to the founders who took a chance on me as well

My current job didn't come via HN, but around the time I took it I got several contacts for several very promising opportunites otherwise.

In terms of ratio between effort expended to leads generated, those hiring threads are A+.

I've had great experiences from here too. Almost took one, but I was their second choice and they were my second choice as well, but it would have been great. I'd rank HN as the best place to find a job.

Congrats, that's great news! I imagine it was a bit nerve-wracking to put yourself out there like that, but it's great that it paid off for you.

Thank you! It's life-changing news! You know, I didn't even take the time to get nerves over it, because the comment was so easy to post and later edit (no forms to fill out, etc...). Just an overall awesome experience.

It was nerve wracking the first month for me and I deleted my post (fun fact: you can delete/edit your posts on that thread any time). But after a while, nothing bad happened so I kept posting there. Like OP, there were no responses the first time, but after getting your message out more clearly, they come in.

Congrats, very happy for you! And thanks for letting us know!

I like your website - very simple. It's nice to see a new developer not use any JavaScript on their site.

Thanks! Well, I just needed to present some static information, so, no scripts needed :-)

Congratulations!

Congrats, well done!

That’s awesome. Congratulations!
