Past discussion with-depth on how they had been provoked by a forum of cyberbullies:

https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=27652814

The article doesn't go in to depth and "They had mental issues" doesn't cut it.

-2, down-votes for what exactly? Linking to a previous discussion of the same news about the same thing that has been on the front page three times in a row?

I found both links to be useful since they offer additional context - you must be reading too much into someone posting links to relevant information.

But I'm not trying to score points over someones death. Where did you see that assumption?

I'm linking to other discussions. It's tragic, but the real reason is he was bullied by an online forum. The other discussions, it's been all over HN for the past day or two.

Why would I try to score karma and where you get that assumption from? I must be mentally blind.

The threads I've posted explains where the case goes in to deeper discussion of how the forum KiwiFarm has been pinning him for years. Encouraging him to commit suicide.

The same news/discussion that's been over HN all day.

Out of respect, could we change the title to use their preferred pronouns?

The original title of the article is "The Dev Behind One Of The World's Best SNES Emulators Has Reportedly Passed Away", it looks like the submitter changed the title because the permalink matches the title.

Very sad. I loved reading byuu's blog, now down and apparently deleted from the wayback machine. Such detailed articles and well written.

EDIT: not quite, here is my favourite: https://web.archive.org/web/20210111213509/https://byuu.net/...

Rest in peace byuu.

When will people start to use the correct language when talking about suicide. The submitter even editorialised the title to include "Has Taken Their Own Life" when the original reads "Reportedly Passed Away".

Leave it to people to frame suicide as something one very actively does to oneself - like they themselves are the only one responsible. And then they wonder why such wordings act as triggers to other people.

At-least it's nice that they didn't include any graphic details.

Suicide is caused by mental illness, or your circumstances, and its execution is a deliberate decision, one they likely contemplated several times before.

That said, it seems like the deciding circumstance in this case was a mob of relentless internet and real life harassers. Their enablers should definitely face some consequences, and their means of harassing should be severed as much as possible.

> “Near took their own life”. That’s how a news article would phrase it. Suicide is a voluntary action, a problem with oneself. Implying nobody is to blame but the victim and perpetrator, one and the same.

> Near did not commit suicide. Near was murdered. Victim of a lifetime of harassment. After an abusive childhood, and followed by community toxicity, Near was eventually targeted by Kiwi Farms.

From a statement by the friend who was on the line for his last moments. https://docs.google.com/document/d/12pOhaaFh998B0kyc5Sm4Ihlh...

This was not a passive act. This was not a mental health issue. This was murder, premeditated, and with utter and complete indifference to human life, by a site that is widely known and supported by some of the largest corporations in tech.

Cloudflare still provides services to KF despite repeated requests and reports as recently as December of last year. Despite occasional promises to the contrary, search engines like Google and DDG continue to allow them to googlebomb people's names and pollute search results with slander.

This is a site that delights in murdering people for sport, and jokes about "kill counts" whenever one of their victims finally succumbs to their relentless abuse and harassment. Its members deliberately targeted them with endless abuse, tracked down and doxxed family and friends, and even similarly attempted to bomb them with suicidebait themselves, all to completely isolate them from any support or help and make them terrified not just for their own life, but that of those who cared for them.
