RIP John McAfee (1945-2021)

tax evading conspiracy nuts do not apply

I think it's fair to say that tribute is held for those with both distinguished and honorable careers.

So you are saying a judgement call on lifestyle and behaviour trumps achievements independant of such factors (eg cheating or knobbling of opponents etc).

This would seem to be a very slippery slope and very much in the eye of the beholder - eg next thing you will want to withdraw Einsteins Nobel prize because he was agnostic.

I say let achievements alone be the measure and decouple the private life of the individual concerned where not directly related to how the achievements were made.

It goes to whomever the mods feel deserves the distinction, under whatever rationale they decide, and it isn't up to popular vote.

Some parts of Hacker News are a black box and this is one of them. Decisions will be made that you don't agree with. It's probaby best to accept that and move on.

>>So you are saying a judgement call on lifestyle and behaviour trumps achievements...

No, so let me clarify it for you. I'm saying McAfee was not honorable[1].

1. https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/honorable

Maybe not, but I couldn't say as I did not know him personally.

So Bill Gates, is he honorable to your standards?

What about Steve Jobs, reputedly not the nicest of people to some, what should we do about him?

Erwin Schrodinger, Thomas Jefferson, Charlie Chaplin, Westinghouse - what's your judgement on them?

You can honor whomever you want but neither of us get to say who HN honors with that black bar.

I wouldn't give McAfee that honor myself and don't feel the need to judge those you mention, and won't.

I have never seen a black bar ever be used.

although with some css mods you can change it to any color you like
