I think what they are trying to (not) say is that while it might have been a lab leak it's better for the funding situation not to dig too deep.
Also if that turns out to be true it might be harder to get countries to cooperate because they will be too busy blaming china.
I think they are probably right about both. Its just not the kind of argument you woukd naively expect from scientists.
