Though I'm not entirely clear on the benefits of this vs smaller casts + riveting/welding. I can't imagine it's much faster/cheaper/stronger to do it this way than to have one machine for casting and another for riveting pieces together.
I would understand it more if it was a performance car where every ounce mattered, and structural rigidity is at a premium.
