On the bright side (no pun intended), at least solar storms don’t correlate with our pollution of the planet and thus won’t get more frequent or severe as our planet warms.
They won’t get worse as New York is submerged under the Atlantic ocean, but they’ll just add salt to the wound periodically over 150 years...
Thankfully the speed of light gives us a day or so of warning time when a blob of charged plasma is headed our way, we just need to mobilize the entire world to respond appropriately!
Yeah, if we had a similarly-sized power grid on Mars, the lack of a strong geomagnetic field would make quick work of that grid. Although I’m sure the increased distance from the Sun might help reduce the frequency of flare hits versus misses.
It’s always fun to teach people about this event! The Sun isn’t as far away as one might think... and its angry plasma belches can get quite nasty for our electromechanical world.
