Ask HN: What are your unpopular beliefs?
5 points by graderjs on May 13, 2021 | hide | past | favorite | 2 comments
What things do you know to be true, that other people doubt?

What was your biggest counter-intuitive discovery?

What do you understand about your business / work that no-one else gets?

What are the biggest / most outlandish conspiracy theories that you actually think are true? (and why?)

What ideas do you find yourself really believing in but which put you at odds with your GROUP (GROUP := countrymen/women, local community, family, workplace)

Bonus points: What was your Galileo (or Eureka!) moment? How did you come to realize this knowledge outside the ken of common folk, or how have you been persecuted, burned at the stake, excommunicated, forced to recant or witch-dunked for it?

This reminds me of this Reddit thread[1].

My favorites are:

  - There is a 1 in roughly 5.2 to the 61st power chance that if you were to slap a table, all of the molecules in your hand and the table would miss each other and your hand would go through it.
  - Greenland extends east of, west of, south of and north of Iceland.
  - Switzerland has accidentally invaded Liechtenstein thrice in the last 50 years.
  - The last guillotine execution in France was in 1977

Geographic internet addressing would work fine. It's not that we can't It's that we don't.

In like sense, BGP is mostly a wank. Most routing is static and its 70,000 ASN not 800,000 prefixes which matter. Rebalance the IPs, easy to do. Nobody with addresses wants to, that's all. Incumbent advantage.

Monopoly networks are fine. Its a public utility function. Look at Uruguay. Digital access is free to the unemployed and pretty ubiquitous urban FTTH was achieved in a small economy by ANTEL the former monopoly telco. Or look at reliance/jio

I'm in addressing distribution and related.
