I have a cousin who buys into the whole 5G causes cancer stuff. He makes sure to not buy any 5GHz routers (802.11 n) for safety reasons... Uggghhhhhh.
I don't know. I mean, if these guys knew how the technology worked, then they wouldn't be fearful of it. But its one thing to have erroneous beliefs, a big problem now is that these conspiracy theories are now giving way to violent actions.
Now the type of violence being discussed by the intercept here is slightly different: they're talking about racially motivated hate groups attacking infrastructure to bring about political change.
But given the current events of the USA (some anecdotal evidence... I feel like there are more 5G conspiracy theorists than far-right white supremacist... but I'm no law official, I don't know for sure...), I have to think that it has to be related to the 5G conspiracy theories as well.
EDIT: Though... the events of January 6th do support the claim that racially motivated hate groups are organizing crimes now. And the thought-process of white-supremacists seem very similar to 5G conspiracy theorists as well ("Jews will not replace us", etc. etc.). So maybe there's more overlap between the two groups than I originally expected.
5G (cell service) and 5.8Ghz wifi dont even use the same frequencies (on purpose)....the only common denominator is the number 5...
Heck i think Sprint is trying to roll out 5G on the 2.5 GHz band...And the frequncies used are licensed and vary greatly (from 850 MHz which 3G and 4G use, to 28 & 39 GHz)
Don't underestimate the seriousness of this. Comms infra is incredibly vulnerable to a small group of highly motivated attackers. A few guys with sniper rifles could take down substations, jeopardizing the whole grid. A few years ago Bruce Schneier and other security experts sounded like alarmists when they theorized about the possibility of hacks that could take down the power grid. It's not theoretical anymore, now you have a significant demographic of Americans that actually believe the sitting government to be illegitimately installed, and are willing to lay waste to the Capitol to make their point.
This demographic is far more dangerous than any foreign adversary precisely because they are "among us", and are also well-connected, well-armed, highly motivated by increasing marginalization, thus fuelling their grudge.
