I only skimmed this on first reading, so maybe I missed it. They note how different populations like the poor and racial minorities come out at different rates. But it seems they don't consider the idea that different sub-populations of gay men may come out at different rates based on the field they enter, or because of different cultural or family backgrounds, or personality traits (likely related to the kind of field they are attracted to), or similar factors.
It's my anecdotal experience that gay men in such fields are more likely to be in the closet, at least at work. Many of the worst horror stories I've heard about people being screwed over in academia in Canada due to homophobia are in STEM, sadly. I get the impression that graduate chemistry studies at one university might be worse for collusive homophobic psychological torment than if you just dropped out of high school and went into construction. I know one man who went back into the closet and switched universities to finish his degree.
I suspect men with such experiences are probably also more likely to be "straight" on the census data and surveys.
