This is also my technique (I don't think it's only Feynman's, I've come across it from various sources). If I get stuck or confused when explaining something to someone then it's clear to me that I've to learn more about the matter even before the person I'm explaining it to does.
I reckon I've got the gist of something when I've learned about something or some phenomena in one field then recognize similar in some very different endeavor and then put the fact to some use there.
Every time I've tried to shortcut and cram or rote learn from textbooks I either fail the exam or do badly in it. I wish there were a shortcut, if there is, then I've yet to find it.
