The Republic of China was not founded in 1949 when the Nationalists fled the mainland for Taiwan, as is claimed in the article, but in 1912 following the Chinese Revolution and overthrow of the Empire.
The Communists then took over the whole of China except the province of Taiwan where the government and its supporters retreated.
When the Communists then proclaimed the People's Republic of China their position was, and still is, that the Republic of China had ceased to exist. And obviously the ROC does not recognise the PRC, either. Hence the current situation.
The status quo has been working for 70 years and has maintained peace. Neither Taiwan nor the US, or the regional neighbours, have any interests in changing it.
