Ask HN: Favorite Music to Program To?
8 points by flyGuyOnTheSly on Jan 11, 2021 | hide | past | favorite | 12 comments
I've been struggling to find a decent band/playlist of music that has no discernible lyrics in it for years now.

Just about to program and wanting to listen to a little something right now, at a loss, so I figured I'd ask y'all!

What was the last song/artist/playlist you listened to while you got into the groove of programming?

I’ve found that all the Reznor/Ross collaborations work really well for deep work in general, coding or not.

The Social Network soundtrack is a favorite to start anytime I’m doing “heads down” work, but most of their catalog fills that need nicely https://music.apple.com/us/artist/trent-reznor-atticus-ross/...

I guess I'm going to be that person, but: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Selected_Ambient_Works_85%E2%8...

It's the album I keep going back to when I'm in the zone.

I submitted this thread as well: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=19579216

I've been into program to music to: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aleatoric_music

If you want indiscernible lyrics: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uz47h75_FJo

(Not sure this fits the criteria of 'decent')

I like long pieces that distort my sense of time and concentration and give texture to the feeling of being in the zone. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ZZ0DYIkaP8

The A.B.C Kids digital radio sends this out at night. It's continuous, easy listening background music, mainly classical.. https://www.abc.net.au/kidslisten/sleep-through/

I really like PsyTrance and Goa. Search for „Astrix“ or „Ace Ventura“ (artists) + „ozora“ or „boom“ (festivals) on YouTube. I really like the speed of it and if there are lyrics, they are very repetitive / meditation like. Also the sets are quite long.

If you are in a workplace setting, try to keep the live sets in a background tab, as Goa/PsyTrance Festival recordings might have half naked people in them.

Edit: Or try to find artists in a genre you like, singing in a foreign language. I really like Korpiklaani, as don’t understand and probably never will understand a word of Finnish.

Fallujah has been doing the rounds for the last weeks for me. No discernible lyrics at all.

But if you're not into epic progressive death metal then I recommend di.fm.

Have you tried IDM? Works wonders for me. Here's one artist from my home country that was also featured in Guardian few years ago: Kleemar https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s_g9wW8iR3E

My go to is Club D’Elf. 1/2 morrocan trance 1/2 jam band with an impressive lineup of guests. Hundreds of live shows with professional level recordings on archive.org.

I listen to lofi hip hop music playlist in Spotify.
