Ask HN: How to keep daily habit routine interesting?

I would say I’m a productive person who likes to stick to good habits. In the long run, I get demotivated when following the same routine. E.g., waking up every morning knowing that I’ve planned a 1-hour workout mentally bores me. Planning different day to day routines is a real time-kill.

How do you manage your daily routine keeping it exciting?

Well, write down 7-10 "healthy" morning habits, like yoga, workout, journaling, listening to music, etc and roll a dice every morning. If it's must be physical activity, choose several areas, like stretching, skill training (handstands for example), cardio, strength, agility (maybe try HIT trainings) and roll a dice for them or choose one for every day of a week. Also you can write some kind of script which will mix up your daily routine or choose an exercise of day for you. (Check https://darebee.com/).

Maybe arrange some (even if trivial) perks along the way, after you finish your "chores".

Before the pandemic I was more willing to get up and commute to work just to get the cup of (quite good) coffee from our espresso machine and chat with friends. I feel even with all the slacking-off I was more productive than WFH.

Having said that I have a hard time sticking with any habits at all, so well...

I've always had a better time waking up on exciting days like the first day of class or a day when my roommates and I were planning to get coffee. With the pandemic, there's been quite a few fewer days like that, but let's hope that's almost over.

This is something I heard on a podcast not long ago, just passing it forward: start with a routine for just a minute a day. Do it so for few days. Then start increasing amount of time you spend doing that routine.

I have recently started using Notion. None of these tools are perfect, but I find that in Notion I can invest a little bit of creativity and adaptation into the structure of routine, and therefore it is more engaging. Good luck.
