Britain takes a gamble with Covid-19 vaccines (statnews.com)

Really, aren't we all taking a gamble with the vaccines? They tested one regimen, and we know how effective it is, but we don't know how quickly it can reduce the density of infection to get R below 1. The number we're gambling on is the total death count, and nobody has complete information.

They do have some information, presumably more than I do, and know the calculations of this gamble. I don't know if they're making an informed choice or not. I generally assume that if it's coming from the political sources then it's not, and if it's coming from the medical decision-makers then it is. Even if it's the latter, it's still just their best guess based on incomplete information, but I'd give them the benefit of the doubt that it really is their best guess with the bottom line (death toll) in mind.

They have been gambling, and losing, since March (or even January) by continuously refusing to take early and drastic action only to make late U turns.

Really at this point the vaccine is our only chance because the government does not look like it's going to improve any time soon. Let's hope that this gamble on how to administer the vaccine will not end up in another catastrophe...
