Ask HN: FarmVille on FB is dead. Are there good alternatives for seniors?
5 points by IG_Semmelweiss on Jan 1, 2021 | hide | past | favorite | 11 comments
Loved one (senior) spent hours on FV. I noted thru FB that FV kept this person going during COVID. I want to buy/suggest alternatives to FV.

Person does not play video games. Not even casual mobile apps. This is why no transition into FV2 is expected. Eye-hand coordination is not great. Person has iPhone 8 and the ultralite Mac. Spends a lot of time on FB, so a social aspect would be great (MMO?).

What are good options for a paid game alternative?

Old School RuneScape could be an option[0]

Its a simple point-and-click game where you level up and accumulate resources over time. Its an open world so you can set whatever goals you want

It's free to play, but you can also pay for membership ($11/month) where you get access to a bigger world, more things to do, and more items to acquire

Yes, and with being a member, you get access to the farming skill!

A social casual game that's not a giant hairball of money-grabbing dark patterns, that's a tall order.

You might find something here, I've found some pretty good games on Android at least: https://nobsgames.stavros.io/ios/?s=reviews&page=1

Would Among Us be a possibility, or some other Mafia game? Town of Salem might fit the bill: https://store.steampowered.com/app/334230/Town_of_Salem/

I'm going to follow this thread, please comment if and when you find something, I'd really like to know what does and doesn't work for situations like this.

Thanks for the suggestions, I will try all of these and see if anything sticks (which is mostly what I am aiming for)

I have no idea why FV2 did not stick, so kind of tinkering atm.

Animal Crossing hands down would be the best bet.

Craftopia or multiplayer Stardew Valley, perhaps?

Hmm craftopia - i haven't even heard of that one . THanks I will check it out!

"Person does not play video games. Not even casual mobile apps. This is why no transition into FV2 is expected...."

Maybe suggest FV2?

I think it was tried at some point.

I was under the impression that with FB discontinuing flash, all FV variants would be out from the platform. Although the FV2 may be available on mobile, for a person of said age, navigating the UX would make the game more of a grind than it already is.

I'd also like to take the opportunity to shift gears into paid games that do not use dark patterns , if possible

Stardew Valley or Animal Crossing.

i think i will try both of these. THanks!
