'Leave shaming' employees needs to stop (m.dailyhunt.in)

At first I thought this was going to be about the ever popular "why I quit Google" posts, where people get to feel morally superior as well as humblebrag about the impressive tech firms they've quit.

My previous jobs, everyone was legally was allowed to use their vacation. Nobody did. I had a coworker whose mother died in Italy/Romania. Somewhere over there. He took vacation time to go to funeral. We even legally have bereavement leave.

When he got back from this vacation he got publicly chewed out for having very bad numbers. Apparently he was expected to continue working during his vacation/funeral.

Last job? Don't even use the V word. NOBODY is allowed time off. 1 guy his wife was american and he look the entire year off for paternity. Legally allowed to do this. The owner/boss went around talking about how he should fire him.

Another guy needed emergency surgery and was even briefly put in coma because he had bad blood sugar and couldnt do the surgery. He was actually fired for taking time off.

The title is inaccurate. It should be "'Leave shaming' employees needs to stop in India"

This is horrific. I doubt the people who really need to hear this are on hn, but I hope something comes of it.

Why would you doubt they’re on HN? I’ve seen some light versions of this at my current workspace.

A coworker took 3 weeks off in November to return to her home country for her sisters wedding. The new manager on our team was questioning how she could do that (we have an unlimited PTO policy, and the coworker had not taken much PTO in the past).

It’s a lot more common than you would imagine.

At my current place of employment I have been ask at the "last minute" to reschedule one week vacations booked months in advance in each of the last three years. It seems that "something" has a habit of "coming up" whenever key employees want leave.

The first two times I acquiesced, but the last time was a drip to Disney with my family. I told the company it was not possible to reschedule. In retrospect, I should have told them it was not possible the first time.

They are on blind talking about FIRE and tc

The culture at Indian IT firms seems incredibly toxic from what I’ve heard. Long hours, low pay, incompetent managers and thus frequent turnover. So this doesn’t sound that surprising.
