Zoologist Matthew Cobb who studies modeling maggot neural systems, has just published a book "The Idea of the Brain" about the different conceptual models we have had for the brain through time. He talks about the limitations with he chemical based, neural transmitter model. That there is no drug that can be guaranteed to cure a mental illness, and that most of the large pharmaceutical research companies have withdrawn from developing new drugs in this area. And perhaps it was these companies that popularized the notion of "chemical imbalance" in the first place.
