I'm not convinced that tofu is the correct solution, but every criticism of https is true. In addition, it requires a public ip, something that may become scarce soon. I think that tofu combined with sites that poll is possibly a solution. Then you can crosscheck, and revoke authorities without bringing the whole system down. It would also make it harder for governments to mitm, since they would have to subvert many places instead of just one.
