Ask HN: When working towards a goal, how do you find relevant books?
1 point by ahmaman on May 26, 2020 | hide | past | favorite
Every time I have a new goal in mind, I spend hours looking for the right books.

The issue seem to be that books are organised by genres, but often books from different genres are relevant. For example, if I am starting a business, I found biographies, history & even fiction books to be very helpful even though they are not "business" genre per say.

Also the timing needs to be right for the book to click. If you read a book about parenting and you don't have a family yet it might not be as impactful read after-all.

How do you typically find books about whatever is important to you at the moment?

Together with friend we came up with an idea related to this topic. To build a service that arranges books around life stages and goals instead of genres. A quick demo about how the idea could look like: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/14cn8FO7p622Vz9kFnagd8cJWPNqjtdvCbVS534GEKuU/edit#gid=0

Would love to hear how others go around this issue.

P.S: Also feel free to add any book recommendations to the demo list.
