Ask HN: Best Resources for Learning IPv6?
3 points by nvahalik on Feb 25, 2020 | hide | past | favorite | 1 comment
What are some good resources for learning IPv6 from (one or both of) a developer perspective as well as system administrator perspective?

What does one need to know when deploying it in production? How do most (or all) of the things I've come to know with IPv4 translate into IPv6?

What do all of the various terms and link-types mean and how do they work?

While I've seen https://ipv6.he.net/certification/ it didn't seem like it gave a solid grounding but was more focused on getting it usable. Perhaps I didn't make it far enough in.

Step 1. Get an IPv6 connection going. Native strongly preferred, but 6to4 if you have no other option.

From there, play around with network applications and examine some packet sniffs of your traffic. Poke around at Wikipedia and RFCs and Google as appropriate.

The biggest things that seems to trip newbies up is that there is no broadcast traffic with IPv6, and ICMP and multicast are crucial for proper IPv6 operation.

Brief up on SLAAC and DHCPv6 what they are and when you'd use them.
