Apple had ample of experience with electronic/handheld devices... A car and a phone is an impossible comparison, best exemplified by the fact that Apple also tried and failed in this field.
The other major difference is that Sony and Samsung are major industrial conglomerates. Apple mostly makes computers, smartphones, and tablets, all of which share components.
