Yeah, the (vague) takeaway I get is that AdSense is a small part of their income, with majority coming from direct brand deals.
Since it all comes out of the same marketing budgets eventually, does this mean integrated influencer advertising is meaningfully undercutting digital ads run by the platforms?
Not meaningfully no - most influencer campaigns have a part for ads to support the content so I think in the Balance it probably builds more ad business.
Call me a cynic, but it feels very typically hypocritical for the author to be a feminist and proponent for women’s social change yet repeatedly post half naked pictures of herself and partner on social media and Instagram. You have to admit the absolute double standard and conflicting message there.
I don’t have to admit that, because it’s not true. If women doing whatever they want with their bodies (be that showing them off or covering them up) isn’t feminism, then I don’t know what is.
To me the problem arise when you start debating an issue, for example: "should people using twitch/IG/FB for soft-core porn be allowed ?", and the only argument for it is "you can't tell me what to do because it's misogynistic".
Feminism degenerated in that weird shapeless notion that many people use to justify very arguable things as "it's just feminism mate, stop being oppressive". It's very hard to tell if someone is really supporting women rights or hiding behind it for personal interests, especially when money is at stake. At the end of the day you draw the line where you want, exposing yourself online for ad money doesn't rank very high on my scale, no matter the gender, and you'll be hard pressed to convince me it helps the women's cause.
> If women doing whatever they want ...
This is what 6 years old kids want, you're supposed to grow out of the "let me do whatever I want and never judge me" mentality. As soon as you willingly expose yourself online you give away your "don't judge me" card.
I personally understand both sides of the argument but I would like to be a devil's advocate this time and provide an opinion similar to the OP:
The analogy of this will be like someone who declares that he is the master of his own fate and has freedom to do whatever he wants. Then he proceeds to slave away in a dead-end job with non-existent autonomy.
What argument? The original commentator simply displays a deep misunderstanding of what feminism is about.
Feminism (in this case) is being able to pose naked as a woman, in the same way you would be as a man and not being treated any differently for it. Case in point: Most people wouldn't suggest it's anti-masculism if a male was posing naked. So then don't do it with females. There you go, feminism.
I tend to agree with you but the GP may feel that we live in a society that has decided showing off one's body is the only way for a woman to get attention and succeed and that any feminist who realizes it should try not to go along with the trend.
i don't know if those are really related in the way you've stated.
i agree, she's taking advantage of her/her partner's attractiveness to boost influence, but that doesn't seem to be related to feminism in my view - that's just leveraging assets.
a double standard there would be like responding to a critical comment from another woman by saying "well, men know best" or something like that.
What is the conflicting messages? I’ve never heard feminists or advocates for woman’s social change talk about woman having to cover up on pictures or avoid social media and instagram. That sounds more like fundamentalist Christian or Islamic beliefs.
along the lines of “Men objectify women and treat them based on their looks...” Proceeds to post sexy and half naked pics for exposure and thus advertising revenue.
I have been in a few respectful conversations with alternating views. Usually in their view, it’s men’s fault for sexualizing the female body. Just like if a 13 y/o girl it wearing “skimpy” clothes it’s adult men who are the perverts for sexualizing a child.
Not saying I agree. But I’m also not pro slut shaming. I don’t think men can really turn this off. Like the kid thing; 1) relatively new and completely subjective concept that <18 is off limits (we’ve literally decided as society that peek fertility is off limits) (feel obligated to say I do agree with the decision in current society where mental maturity comes later) 2) men can and probably have sexualized every possible think, even something like a bee hive. It’s a major part of our brain and I’m not sure how these women just think we can turn off an instinct.
I call bullshit. They are telling me they probably make less than I expect they make, but if they actually gave numbers I’m certain it’s far above what most expect and that they would in the light of the actual facts appear quite greedy for wanting more.
If that’s not he case I’m unsure why they push this vague cop out of an attempt to argue why more is justifiable without actually answering the title questions.
Not that I care (I don't even know who these people are), but the statement, "We don't make enough to cover our mortgage or our bills"... doesn't really tell me anything.
For example, what is your mortgage? $1000 a month, or $15K a month? And how much of your "bills" are from credit card charges from shopping sprees or whatever?
