Whether a maps app has compass capability enabled depends on the parent hardware: in particular, if the hardware contains a magnetometer. On my iPhone X, Google Maps clearly shows the compass direction with a blue cone emitting from my location 'circle'.

All iPhones since iPhone 3G (IIRC) have a magnetometer.
