Didn’t the NSA tap Google’s backbone? Everything was unencrypted all they needed were taps at willing backbone providers. [1] Who needs to beat the silicon when you can just tap the pipes. If Bill Barr’s recent encryption speech is ever realized silicon wont matter.

And Google responded by encrypting data immediately.


Google also responded immediately to getting hacked by the Chinese - no more Windows laptops or PCs for developers 10 years ago.

The security of Chrome is astounding (and certainly far better than Apple or Microsoft).

The only black stain is Android... (Edit: disclaimer: I use Android)


And proceeded to become the industry leader in "don't trust the network" defense in depth.


What other choice did they have though? Post the Shrug ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ emoticon on google.com and carry on?


I bet that's exactly what most companies did. Most enterprise WANs are probably still not encrypted today and it would bankrupt their IT departments to do it.


They can't win here on HN can they ? Mistakes happen. It's how you respond that counts as well.
