Why do companies like Facebook and Google resort to advertising?

Is there a way for companies like Google and Facebook to make money that doesn't sell out their customers? Do they really make that much from advertising that it's not even worth thinking about alternatives. It's gross.

First quarter 2019 Google made 9.4 billion profit. That's 100 million USD per day. They will think about alternatives, as long as those numbers doesn't decrease.
