This will sound like HN's initial dismissal of Dropbox's business idea, but for distraction-free writing I use a non-WiFi Raspberry Pi with Emacs on a framebuffer (no X). I never turn it off.

Sure, it's not very portable, but it isn't $600 either. And I version control with git and push ocassionaly to GitHub for backups.
