I think that is because the visualization isn't clear. I think it would be better if the movie bubbles were scaled to how many other movie connections it had, rather than just the number of arrows pointing to it, which doesn't work as well.
Also, we can't see what those connections are, and from what I'm looking at, it is difficult for me to understand.
Knowing that IMDB holds data on the actors, producers, etc. I was expecting that was the connection, x number of actors/producers/directors from film a worked on film b, but it doesn't look like that is what this does.
The beauty of pagerank is the simplicity. The IMDB movie connections has lost that simplicity I think.
it's explained in the blog post. it's the result of running pagerank on connection/references between movies, and graphing the connections between the top 100. you can see the pagerank when you hover over a title.
maybe the size of a node should indicate the rank to make it clearer.
i've replaced it with a new version which scales the node size according to the pagerank. i agree that the graph is a bit messy with all these connections floating around but it was also the intention to show the density of references between films.
