I heard horror stories at Boeing about mechanics who were sure the instructions were wrong, and would go so far as to use adapters to hook things up backwards. This is why the design tries to make it as hard as possible, plus making it easy to inspect and determine if it is wrong, plus adding it to the preflight checklist.
