Question, can the PC/x86 version of GEOS run in QEMU or Virtualbox? Or does it directly address 80286 hardware in such a way that it's not easy to emulate?

Even if it doesn't you may be able to get it working with PCem or 86box (fork of PCem which is a bit more user friendly).
