I tried to do something like this for a while, but ended up much preferring a local copy of the codebase with the changes rsynced across to the server. Without the files locally, the editor wasn't able to index them, so it was a little janky to jump to other files in the project, and a lot of the utility of plugins (like automatic code completion) just didn't work great since it couldn't find the relevant files to use.
