Why do we have duplicate meta tags, standard, OpenGraph and Twitter cards?

Most public web pages now include the Standard, OpenGraph and Twitter meta tags, all which usually all have the same duplicated content? <meta property="og:description"> <meta name="description"> <meta name="twitter:description">
