If it is already erroneous to expect a single individual to act as a rational economic agent, why should a rational economic behavior be expected from a loose aggregation of individuals?
What I've learnt from working in such companies is that individual career trajectory and team politics is the real focus of anyone attention, and that the external world appears as abstract and distant to them as these internal manoeuvers are opaque to outsiders.
