This is all good advice, but I'm not sure the Perl Cookbook is a necessary component. HOP definitely is, though. Learning Perl and Intermediate Perl are great learning books...they make a nice starter before the camel (though the camel is a must-have, no matter what, so pick it up at the same time and treat it as a reference until you're ready to dig deeper).
