You probably haven't used it since pre-vista if that is your experience. Microsoft changed a lot of internals that really improved the situation on Windows. For instance: WDDM can recover from a graphics driver crash, with the added benefit of allowing you to install and use new graphics drivers without rebooting or even losing your open windows.



My laptop has win7 on it, and it crawls compared to my linux installation. It's a really unpleasant experience.
