To red team that line of reasoning: hold on to the hacked data but don't use it, wait till public forgets about it, don't give business/lawmakers a reason to neuter the data, then strike a few years down the line.

Username related; please don't.

Coincidentally this is the second time today I've seen a profile description that took a real hard line against people not using their real names.

I never realized "real name elitism" existed on HN

I wonder what constitutes a "novelty" username. Does patio11 count? What about dang? What about _why?

It's a response to people with crass, Reddit-like usernames, like BloodyDickFart. Sound comment or not, I'd rather not engage in that type of conversation. I don't expect people to use their real names, a username is fine, I said novelty names.

Do... do those come up a lot here on HN? Aside from dead throwaways?

Yes, and the frequency is increasing.

Fortunately, I think it's rare.

Perhaps "about: payment tech" explains it.

That explains the comment, I mean the micro rant about "only real names get responses"

Why put quotes if you're not quoting what I said? You are suggesting that your modified text is what is on my profile and it's not.

Quotes can have multiple meanings, some of which oppose each other.

Generally one is expected to use context clues to disseminate which meaning is most relevant to a given sample of text.

In this case they were to indicate a somewhat mocking tone in my paraphrasing.

The exact quote actually managed to be more condescending than that:

> Commentors with novelty usernames should not expect responses.

On a totally unrelated note, you sound like a wonderfully pleasant person to interact with. I am deeply saddened those of us with "novelty usernames" might miss out on that.
