I have a question quite similar in spirit to [1], about startup ideas in bioinformatics, or more specifically, problems that needs to be solved.
While [1] was asked 5 years ago, the field of bioinformatics/biology/biotechnology seems to have gone through a small explosion in that time. Today there are 187 "bioinformatics" startups listed on AngelList [2]. There seems to be lots to do, but I'd like to try to not redo things that are already done well by others.
Shortly, my background is that I'm a PhD student in pharmaceutical bioinformatics with approx 1 year left to dissertation, developing some pretty general technologies for data engineering in bioinformatics (two flow-based programming based computation coordination frameworks), so I feel I probably would have to narrow in on one or a few specific concrete problems, to find a working company idea to solve, using these technologies, or the experience I got from developing them.
