I'm surprised that these fewer core processors aren't clocked higher out of the box than the 8 core parts.


There is a "clock wall" for these Ryzen CPUs. Most of R7 CPUs won't go past 4.0 GHz with air cooling. And disabling cores won't help in that front.


I think it's each CCX being limited (don't know if thermally or otherwise). But it certainly looks like it considering that they are achieving the exact same clock speeds as the R7 1800X, which is just two CCXs packaged together. (This architecture should scale very nicely for server chips though)
