I don't think this is anything new; according to http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/maps/thread?tid=428921..., it's been that way since at least May 2009.

The satellite view seems to have white lettering that has been mostly blurred out. Maybe Google's license to those photographs didn't include the un-annotated versions?
