I've felt the same way as the writer myself. There is an immense feeling of betrayal when you are a mentor and your protege decides to cheat instead of learning what you are teaching. They begin to try to use you like "Bryan" used his mentor. If you did help them cheat, you feel dirty and put-upon. I don't think the mentor went out of his way to destroy a promising career. He had to do what was necessary to allay the negative feelings he felt, and he couldn't get over them any other way. You might have been different and just dropped communication and went on with your merry life, but it's Bryan's fault for abusing his mentor, not the mentor's fault for restoring balance.
