USB Type-C has provisions for putting audio directly onto auxiliary pins exactly for this purpose.

However, I suspect most won't get rid of the standard audio jack without a good reason.

USB Type-C is pretty amazing. It's effectively full-duplex ethernet, power-over-ethernet, and some low-speed garnish all wrapped into a single reversible connector.

Yeah, it's just too bad there aren't many quality multi-purpose hubs/adapters yet.
