I'm speculating here:

This could be a SHA256 or a SHA3 hash of a "commitment message".

I have seen this done by people who then some time later post the original message, to prove their suspicion of something since that earlier date.

I had found this as well, but it was marked as flagged and no solid conclusions were drawn from the comments. So I figured I would ask HN instead of trying to link out somewhere (there was no where to link to anyway). Probably should have included that in the related links. Anyone know why it was flagged?
