Sure, they should've anticipated that someone with no HVAC experience was going to come along and make an inferior product that's in the cloud™ and has smartphone apps and whatnot.
What they didn't anticipate is that they'd actually be as hyped as they were. Luckily for them, Nest had many, many embarrassing failures with their products that Nest's brand has faded quite a bit. I don't think established players like Honeywell are in any real danger here, unless they, in turn, mess up with their now "IoT" products.
